FluMist is a needle-free influenza vaccine that is new to Australia in 2026. It is sprayed gently into the nostrils and has been widely used in the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada and the United States for many years. For children who are anxious about needles, it offers a more comfortable and accessible way to get protected against the flu each year.
How does it work?
FluMist contains weakened strains of influenza that help train the immune system to build protection without causing illness. Expected side effects include a runny or blocked nose, headache and tiredness, which are generally mild, short-lived and self-resolving. FluMist provides the same level of protection as the traditional flu injection.

Who can have it?
FluMist is approved for children and adolescents aged 2 to under 18 years.
Who should not have it?
FluMist is not suitable for all children. It should not be given to patients who:
- Are severely immunocompromised, or who live with someone who is severely immunocompromised
- Are currently taking aspirin or aspirin-containing medications
- Have severe asthma or are currently wheezing (speak to your GP first)
- Are pregnant
How to arrange it
For children aged 2 to 17 the vaccine is government funded and available free of charge at HealthFirst. No script is needed, simply book an appointment and our doctors will administer the vaccine.
If your child would prefer the traditional flu injection, this is available at HealthFirst for free (aged 6 months to <5 years old) or $20 (5 -17 years old) and may be free for some eligible medical conditions. No script is needed, simply book an appointment.
